Traditional West African Grief Ceremony – 3rd-5thJanuary 2020
Held by Shanah Rivers, supported by Kate Iwi, 5Rhythms Teacher
Siobhan Davies Dance Studios, London
At times it can feel as if the whole world is in a place of grief. These are challenging times. We are faced with our own personal grief; grief of the destruction of Mother Earth; and grief at the lack of community to hold us. This weekend offers a rare and deep encounter with ourselves. This ancient choreography works in extraordinarily powerful ways: We will drum, sing, dance and create a village where we can safely empty out and transform the burdens we all carry.
Born in Australia, Shanah Rivers has been working with grief for many years both in private practice and group settings. In Australia, she took park in sacred Aboriginal ceremonies and is initiated into The Spirit of the Earth Medicine Society. She holds a diploma in Kinesiology and trained in Lomi Lomi massage and Wu Tao Dance. She has been assisting and facilitating West African rituals around Europe and Australia over the past 12 years.
“If there is a channel through which to stir up and process grief, it is Shanah Rivers. I have worked with her long enough to know that the way she embodies grief, be it for herself or others, is profound. Her genuine authenticity, her devotion, and her loving presence to everyone in a group touch me deeply. What Shanah knows and where she draws from is deep in the other world. To me, Shanah is grief in flesh and bone, she carries it with humble dignity and fluid style. She reminds me of some women in my village who are called ‘the grief carriers.’ They grieve for those who can’t and move them to grieve. Anyone who longs to empty out their well of grief and sorrow should reach out to Shanah. She will deliver. I know it.”
